Re: Meeting 5 out of 7 nights each week

Wow, that's crazy! I remember back in the day they tried having a bible study on Saturday mornings, mostly geared towards kids but open to all families, and group bible studies divided up regionally at different people's houses on Friday nights. Neither of these lasted long because it was just too m...

Re: I don't even have to give the name of the CoC

When I told people I grew up in the CoC I got one of two responses 95% of the time. Either they had never heard of it, or they would go, “Oh yeah, you all thought you were the only ones going to heaven, right?” It’s very telling that most people that know of the CoC knows that they are totally arrog...

Re: The Church is Under Attack!

I remember on numerous occasions being told that, at any moment, police could come barging in our back doors and drag us all to jail because the world “hated” us (the CoC) and wanted to make worship illegal. Talk about terrifying for a kid to hear those things! Of course, like agricola said, once I ...

Re: Did you ever wonder what others in the cOC did for fun?

I remember there were a number of members that would use their vacation days at work during gospel meeting weeks, that way they could attend both morning and night services. I can imagine how that conversation would go at work. "Hey, I see you're taking next week off, where are you going on vac...

Re: Obsession with Baptists

I grew up in a small town that was mostly baptist. There were several large baptist churches and it seemed like most of my friends from school went to one of those churches. Because it was so popular I guess it was easier to pick them out to bash regularly during sermons. It's funny how the coc alwa...

Re: church of Christ phrases

Most of my friends called their preacher a pastor, but we were taught that only "preacher" was the correct term to use. I'll never forget how when talking to my baptist grandparents, and they would talk about their pastor, my mom would always do this exaggerated, "Pastor? What's a pas...

Re: The discontinuation of Sunday evenings

There was really no need for Sunday evening services. We only did it because...well, it's just what we did. Always did it that way and we weren't going to change. I remember it being such a pain in the ass to have to revolve our entire Sunday afternoon around making sure we were able to be back at 5...

Re: church of Christ phrases

I think we sometimes called it "Wednesday night services" but mostly it was referred to as "Wednesday night bible study." Just don't call it "church" because "WE are the church!" and if too many people call it church, the preacher would need to do yet another ...

Re: church of Christ phrases

During the Lord's Supper: "Let us partake of this in a manner that is well-pleasing in thy sight." "Lord willing" - Usually said at the end of a statement referring to anything in the future. ("We'll meet again for bible study Wednesday night at 7:00 Lord willing.") Fal...

Re: http://findthechurch.com

Interesting to see the 2 "sound" churches in Kerrville, Texas both on the list. They do not fellowship with each other after a split a few years ago. You mean the one true church, the Lord's church, didn't agree on something and divided!? I thought there were no divisions in the Lord's ch...
