Re: Preachers becoming lawyers.

No he was one of the liturgical protestant denominations, can't remember which. She was not religious at all. Really didn't have an opinion on religion.

Attended sister's pseudo liberal church

I went with my sister to the CoC she attends. It is a slightly liberal church, they do have two series a contemporary and a traditional one that people can attend. I found some of the practices interesting in perspective and some bad just from a moral point. They have no instruments in the singing, ...

Preachers becoming lawyers.

In the Church I grew up in there were three ministers who went on to become lawyers. I think they found preaching gave them plenty of time to pursue their legal studies. I don't know if they still continued in church work after they became lawyers. One became a lawyer for street walkers and develope...

Re: Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

Of course the idea of not using instrumental music probably came from Alexander Campbell and he didn't advocate it as a theological/scriptural issue. He just advocated it because it was more similar in practice to the early Christians, he had no real opposition to instruments in worship and went to ...

Best books on CoC history

I was wondering what people have found to be the best books to read regarding CoC history. I have the book Reviving the Ancient Faith by Hughes which is good, has a lot of interesting material. There is a series of old books by West, a set of four, entitled Reviving the Ancient Order that I have see...

Unleavened unsalted bread for communion

I never really heard why the CoC uses unleavened unsalted crackers in communion. There is something about unleavened bread being eaten on the passover, I never heard anyone discuss the no salt issue. It seems to me that using unsalted unleavened bread is more a retention of a Roman Catholic traditio...

Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

I have always wondered if people actually use the shape notes or the hand movements song leaders in the CoC use?. Does anyone else do anything similar. The hand movements of the song leader don't to me seem anything similar to what a conductor of an orchestra does. My understanding is shape notes ar...

Re: Book Recommendations?

Some of Shelby Spong's writings are just wrong, just fictional. My favorite is Ehrman. He has books available in all libraries and a great website, also he has multiple free videos on you tube and his website. He was a fundamentalist who lost faith, he recounts the whole process. He is considered pe...

Re: I Went to Church This Morning

My old church still has about 12 people who attend. I have been told people still sit in the seats they have always sat in. It is interesting that places with no reserved seating have an informal reserved seating policy. I have seen this at musical events also.

Mixed Swimming discussions

Mixed swimming and that is not mixed race swimming but rather males and females swimming together (heaven forbid!). This was always forbidden and the party line in my experience but it seemed one that nobody really believed in other than the preachers. I have checked and very few CoC colleges have s...
