Strange CoC experience!

About 20 years ago I met a woman at a dance event, it was either a class or a social event. I talked with her a bit and she asked me to go to church with her Sunday. I didn't know what kind of church it was just that it was at a room at the Albuquerque convention center. She said it was really a nea...

Re: Remarriage after Divorce/No belief in Divorce

The problem with remarrying after "baptism" is unless the grounds for the divorce is biblical (adultery) you would be living in sin. I don't see how this church justifies either divorce or remarriage after abandonment Matthew 9:11 explicit states divorce and remarriage is only permissible ...

Remarriage after Divorce/No belief in Divorce

One of the tortured events I have seen several times (no personnel experience) is divorced people who want to get married at the CoC they attend with the minister refusing to perform the service because they did not have grounds for remarriage. The preachers found out that adultery was not the reaso...

Re: Instrumental music in Church Weddings

If I recall correctly - back in the day (that is, a long time ago) the solution was to have weddings on any day BUT Sunday, and they would bring in a piano or small organ for the wedding, no problem EXCEPT NOT ON SUNDAY. So weddings were Saturdays." I wonder how many people were led astray and...

Instrumental music in Church Weddings

I remember the topic of whether people could use instrumental music at a wedding in a church. It was a tortured issue as many people had gone to the church their whole lives and wanted to be married there but also wanted some nice music at the wedding. What the elders said was we don't want anyone t...

Re: Disfellowship stories/issues?

I was disfellowshipped after I left my group and went to a 'progressive' church with classes and a dining hall . The preacher and other men signed a letter of withdrawal and even sent the thing where I had to sign for it .....What a joke they had known me for a few years and I still live at the sam...

Re: Disfellowship stories/issues?

"She wasn't acquitted." Right she was not convicted of murder but convicted of the lesser included offense of voluntary manslaughter is the correct way to say it I think. She had a very high powered defense attorney representing her, I can't remember how she financed him. Generally it was ...

Re: Disfellowship stories/issues?

Ivy: I had never heard of "marking" very interesting. In my mothers church the minister here, a young and nice man, occasionally refuses to marry members there who he feels do not meet the scriptural requirements for divorce. It is a bit hard for me to understand how a preacher can decide ...

Disfellowship stories/issues?

I always heard a lot of talk about the practice of disfellowship in the 60's and 70's sermons at the CoC but it never happened where I went. Although people talked about places it had occurred. There were even sermons about it. One time they announced their was a plan was for the elders to start vis...
