Re: Ask about Judaism

Culturally - then, Jews value: Education Family Smarts (we even see that in Genesis - who 'wins'? Jacob, the smart one) Look at other Biblical heroes? Generally speaking (with at least one notable exception) they 'win' by being smart, by being clever - this is how you survive violent times when you...

Re: Independent Christian churches

###Self-edited for snarky content###. Life's too short to get into puking matches with buzzards. That, at least, is something we could all learn to avoid...our background's quite full of it. Sorry, carry on.

Re: Another CofC Closing Its Doors

The CofC never grew like the Mormons did, despite all the talk about the CofC being the fastest growing church in the '50s and '60s. I think it's funny how the COC is all, "we're not a denomination" until some inter-denominational comparison arises that makes the COC look good. Then they'...

Re: Another CofC Closing Its Doors

The CofC won't completely die out, but many will dwindle to few members or just shutter up like the church in the article. The graying of the CofC is a reality, and many just aren't adding new members or having sufficient children who will stay in the fold. GuitarHero, there is a resurgent hardliner...

Re: Good memories?

Yes, every time tha assembly was brung together, there had to be a sermon, or even a relatively brief exhortation to get someone down the aisle and into the watery grave of baptism...but usually a full sermon. We had a preacher in the 1970s whose Wednesday schtick included a fairly long sermon, unti...

I think you're the first person I've ever heard say that. The FC graduates I've met were pretty dismissive or even scathing in their opinions of their alma mater.

Re: Good memories?

The congregation I grew up in had some really good singers, and some good songleaders - better than average midrange tenor voices, and a very decent sense of time and pacing. When my family would visit my aunts and uncles, their congregational singing was absolutely terrible - tone-deaf leaders and ...

Re: Good memories?

I'll bet most of us have pretty good memories of the singing. I sure do, and my wife and I will often sing those songs for a few hours on a long road trip, much to our kids' annoyance, as they haven't been raised in a CofC. The singing and the occasional dinner on the grounds is about the exte...

Re: Kooky Communion & Collection Stories

I remember one congregation where there was a long, drawn-out debate over what "longer water" was. Because, you know, Paul told Timothy "drink no longer water," and damn it, if you drink longer water, you will go to hell. You can't make shit like this up. I read "Fried Gree...
