Ah, the old "you're a baptised male now, so at the age of 11 or 12, you're a man, and must be yanked from the kids' classes being taught by women" routine?

Re: Men's business meetings

I've never attended a CofC where all members could attend a business meeting, let alone female members. Most of the CofCs I've known are usually hush-hush about business meetings, unless it was a congregation that wanted to build or add on to a building....then they're quite specific about what doll...

Re: Men's business meetings

I joined up with a local electronics hobby group a few years ago, wanting to learn first-hand some soldering skills and circuit printing stuff. I had what I thought was a legitimate question about a particular subject, and brought up the topic, which landed like a lead balloon in the group. Deafenin...

Re: Rate YOUR CoC - is it a cult?

Whenever I've reviewed "cult" descriptions, my past cofceez have never quite met criteria for being full-blown cults -- probably because there was a certain amount of self responsibility / dogma internalization encouraged. That's not to say, however, that they didn't do their full measure...

Re: Rate YOUR CoC - is it a cult?

Too lazy - or too self-centered, to do 'cult' right. But seriously, how on EARTH is that kind of attitude (and I agree with margin overa's post (above)) considered a proper Christian community? Answer - it isn't. Really. Because if they REALLY cared about their 'fellow members' salvation, they abso...

Re: Rate YOUR CoC - is it a cult?

Just what I've said before - coc's can't even do 'cult' right! It would be too much trouble! I think it's really a general difference of opinion in the traditional, conservative CofC. With the exception of a few lunatics and a few control freaks, the trad CofCs tend to be pretty laissez-faire about...

Re: Rate YOUR CoC - is it a cult?

I do believe that very few of the traditional CofCs rate as cults - they're usually too hands-off about a number of things to exert the kind of control that true cults do. That's not to say that don't try to control certain aspects of the members' lives, but not their finances or giving themselves p...

Re: Divorce

I do fear that once I come out and finally physically leave the CoC, that people will use her divorced status to blame her for my choices. That's unfortunate, and is also not your responsibility - maintenance of a church affiliation to keep people there from criticism and laying blame isn't a worki...

Oh, my...isn't that the truth? How many times have we sat through yet another class talking about those missionary journeys? Bloody Perga, Pisidia, and Pamphilia!

Re: Church Discipline

Agreed. We had a preacher who was so excited to be at "ground zero" of a false doctrine event that he had to submit an article to "Truth" Magazine in order to make sure everyone else knew how special he was in detecting and identifying the problem and how he had stood so firm in...
