Re: Forbidden Questions while CofC

All valid points, and a clear set of rhetorical questions showing the inconsistent application of a hermeneutic.

Re: Greetings and Salutations

Welcome! Yes, we understand where you're coming from - my dad was a preacher, stopped that, then went up the ladder as a deacon and then an elder. I hear you loud and clear about someone subjugating their lives and family to what is essentially an autocratic political position in a church.

Re: CoC Friends

That night I realized that the whole "good wholesome christian" act was all totally fake. This was my biggest problem with my COC friends. Other friends (from "the world") did all the same things, of course, but they were honest about it. In my experience, COC kids and young adu...

Re: CoC Friends

When I was a teenager, my home church had a large group of young people, and several were my very good friends then. Of course, there was plenty of cussin' and drankin' and experimenting with drugs and sex. Not everyone in the group, but more than half, for sure. The usual teenager routine. I have s...

Re: Clapping, Raising your Hands & Mechanical Instruments

The defense in such matters seems to be "we don't do 'x' because the __________s do it" - which is just another inconsistency. If you don't want to look like the Methodists or the Baptists, you've got a lot further to go in differentiating your church and doctrine. Let's hope they never f...

Re: Clapping, Raising your Hands & Mechanical Instruments

Theologically, if I'm OK with the "addition" of a hymnal, I need to be OK with pitch pipes, tuning forks, hand-clapping, toe-tapping, pianos, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, drummers in plexiglass boxes, and rock bands. More relevant to COC theology is to state that in reverse: if I d...

Re: Clapping, Raising your Hands & Mechanical Instruments

I really don't see the old pitch pipe argument. To me it is not a musical instrument in normal parlance and it certainly is not used as an accompaniment. And yes I know it makes a tone and is mechanical. But IMO that seems like a waste of time argument especially when I know some Cofcers who will n...

Re: Clapping, Raising your Hands & Mechanical Instruments

Yes, it's all very silly. Hard to believe grown people go to such contortions to justify their traditions. Talk about straining at gnats and swallowing camels.
