Re: Visiting Other Churches

As a child growing up in C o C I was constantly reminded(as we all were) that any group not C o C was a "denomination"...and all its members were on a one way path to Hell. After graduating college & moving to another state I attended a very hardline C o C; dated young lady there whom ...

Re: Trying to enjoy services

[quote][/Worship services in the CoC were never meant to be enjoyed, they were meant to be endured! quote] Very true! The services were all about making sure we performed the "5 Acts of Worship." Songs and sermon usually had no connection to each other. The sermon was often a diatribe agai...

Re: coc ‘Authorized’ Extra Services

There is no scriptural authorization for Sunday evening services or Wednesday night "Bible Study."

Most C o C folks claim that if the elders have decided to hold service/meeting at those times, members are obligated to attend. Hebrews 10:25 is then quoted in favor of such.

Re: Bad Sermons & Worse Logic

True..the Bible doesn't specifically say to use an instrument. However, C o C does many things for which the Bible gives no authority. It justifies such with the "necessary inference" or "expedient" principles.

Re: No crosses?

Has it been anyone else's experience that in most baptisteries in COC churches, there is either a river mural of some kind or nothing. I've also noticed no crosses on communion ware either. I've also heard a lady self righteously declare before the reasons she does not wear a cross. I can sort of u...

Re: COC History of the Church Timeline

Here it is, skitty: http://charlesdailey.net/churchhistoryrev2-11.pdf My thought about it is that it is myopic, delusional, and just plain wrong. Clearly, the CoC actually started in the 1800's as a branch off the Stone-Campbell movement. That must be an old chart. It shows the United Brethren and ...

Re: C of C People Can Be Mean

C o C people can in deed be mean. I learned that when I left. There were so many nasty..and a few threatening..phone calls that I had to get an unpublished number to stop the calls. The calls weren't "are you coming back?" or "do you want us to take you off the roll?". They were ...

Re: Nashville-area congregation adds instrumental music

Brentwood C o C is "NI". Back during my C o C days we called them "anti."

Concord Rd. is "mainline." It's not too far away from Otter Creek.

One could stand in the middle of Brentwood..throw a rock in any direction..and hit several C o Cs.

Re: Kooky Communion & Collection Stories

The wackiest thing that I ever witnessed during a CofC communion time was when an older man who was carrying the trays down the center aisle at the building tripped over a bit of bunched-up carpet, and went down in full flight, shouting out "goddamn!" as he headed down to the floor and th...

Re: Kooky Communion & Collection Stories

One of the funniest stories I've heard about the "Lawrd's Supper" was told years ago by one of my Lipscomb Bible teachers. This teacher(Bro. Leo Snow) had preached some place..as a substitute, I think..which did things "right." They only used one cup for the grape juice. Bro. Sno...
