Re: church of Christ phrases
There's also that peculiar CofC wording on signs: "The Church of Christ Meets Here" as opposed to just "Church of Christ." Because, y'know, the church is the people and not the building, etc. There were some folks in my youth who had real hangups if you used the term "churc...

Re: If you could change the coC...
I live in a large metropolotian area where the c of c is strong. The largest growing congregations are, by c of c standards, decidedly liberal. Even the few congregations that still embrace older c of c traditions, are liberal if compared to what they were 30+ years ago. One of the identifying char...

Re: Plastic Flowers.
So maybe if they just projected works of art onto the walls (ala Bill Gates) then it would be OK to have some artwork. As long as it wasn't for any type of entertainment or pleasure....."not with eyeservice as menpleasers". And don't show any painting od David playing the harp for King Sa...

Re: Plastic Flowers.
The reality in the places I was part of was that no decoration of any type could rightly be paid for out of the Lord's money. Not even plastic flowers. Anything to do with dressing up the place was always donated...be it some flowers out front or a doily for a table. But somehow air fresheners and ...

Re: church of Christ phrases
"going forward" or he "went forward". You knew exactly what it meant but it sounds weird. or I heard this about a million times: "the old law was nailed to the cross" or said in Lament about a church of Christ doctrine that the "denominations" didn't get/uphol...

Re: Young marriage
My sister's family is hardcore CoC and their kid got married at 21. My brother asked about them getting married so young and she basically said it was so they could have sex without going to hell. I guess it is "right" as long as not sowing any wild oats doesn't come back to haunt them at ...

Re: Lingering doubts
For those of you who have left coc, do you still have lingering doubts of "what if they are right"? If so, how do you deal with it, and especially for those with children, how do you deal with the feeling that you are setting your children up for hell if you are not teaching them "th...

Re: Autonomous ... or not?
I'm not saying autonomy is some sort of safe space. I'm just pointing out that those preaching autonomy so forcefully love to jump in and tell another autonomous group how to do what they do. Not saying it is a hate crime or something or even something major. I am just pointing out the irony. And yo...

Re: Autonomous ... or not?
I was just pointing out that whatever "autonomy" means, it does not require a complete separation and isolation (but it certainly can include isolation). So I pointed out some examples of interaction. If something makes sense to one congregation it might just as well make sense to another...
