Re: Pepperdine University
I'm not terribly surprised. Pepperdine is the most liberal of to schools more-or-less associated with the CoC -- in the South where I grew up, the common opinion I heard was the Pepperdine used to be a Christian college, but here in SoCal, it's popular among the churches still. And being in SoCal, t...

Re: An Open Mind?
Came across this on Facebook the other day, shared by one of my uncles, who is progressive by CoC standards, meaning only a little more conservative than mainstream Christianity...reminded me of this board, and seems to fit right in this thread. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/74484028/studied_u...

Re: Do you have a favorite Bible?
RSV was the favored translation in my house when I was growing up; replaced by first NASB and then the ESV, once it came out, since they stopped publishing the RSV. NIV was very popular when I was at Harding. NRSV was rejected because it used gender-neutral language in places, IIRC; KJV was rejected...

Re: Castaway
CoC preacher's kid, here. I've had issues off and on with some of the congregations I've been at over the years. Earlier this year, I visited a DoC church, and liked it so much I kept going back. For a while, I was going there on Sunday mornings, but still going to my CoC small group on Sunday night...

Re: CoC doctrine on authority is highly inconsistent
What I was taught was that the Mosaic law no longer applied, but other part of the OT, like the laws given to Abraham and to Noah did.

Re: Atheists do NOT worship themselves or anything else
Gnostic Atheists ( never met or even heard of one) these people claim the knowledge that NO God exists. I've met several, some quite evangelical about it. They're pretty obnoxious, as a rule. On one memorable occasion, the evangelical atheists in the audience were enough to make an atheist & ph...

Re: Atheists do NOT worship themselves or anything else
In your argument about pb&j, the usage of nothing has two different connotations, but they are made to be equivalent. Therein lies the problem. In the original post, in this logic, Worshipping idols is not worshipping God Not worshipping God is what atheists do Therefore worshipping idols is wh...

Re: Atheists do NOT worship themselves or anything else
Well, I've known a few atheists who thought highly enough of themselves that I'd argue the point, but as a rule...no. And that "logic" makes as much sense as "Nothing is better than love. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is better than nothing. Therefore, a PBJ is better than love.&...

Re: I have a question about christenings
We told this person to just take the meat & cheese out of the sandwich and not eat the bread. That would make it gluten free, you know? They were still mad. Well, if they really do have a sensitivity to gluten, it probably wouldn't. It would leave traces of the bread on the former contents, and...

Re: Bible Studies All The Time
The church that kicked my parents out [1] had a whole bunch of songs marked "do not use" in every songbook in the building. Mostly, it was the ones that don't actually mention Jesus / God, like Precious Memories, plus one other; I don't remember which. [1] My parents are pretty conservativ...
