Re: Finding Social Support Outside of Religion?
Thanks for the info about Bart Campolo. I'll check him out. I'm in the Dallas area and there are several progressive and secular groups around here, but it's hard to build the community that a church provides without belonging to a religious organization. I may go to a Unitarian Universalist church ...

Re: church of Christ phrases
There's also that peculiar CofC wording on signs: "The Church of Christ Meets Here" as opposed to just "Church of Christ." Because, y'know, the church is the people and not the building, etc. There were some folks in my youth who had real hangups if you used the term "church...

Re: The discontinuation of Sunday evenings
I've been told that Sunday night services weren't commonplace in the CofC until WW2. Apparently lots of people worked in defense industries on Sunday during the day so they started having night services to accommodate them. Then somehow it became a de factor requirement. Not sure if this is true but...

Re: church of Christ phrases
Speaking of Church of Christ terminology--did anyone else ever get confused when talking to members of other denominations? I've had conversations with members of other churches that go like this: "We're meeting in the sanctuary at 6:00" Me: "The whuh--??" "You know, the big...

Re: New here.
Welcome to the board. I've found this a great place to find other people who really understand what life in the CofC is like. I've talked to "refugees" from other fundamentalist sects of Christianity, but it's really a relief to talk with people who've come through the same subculture and ...

Finding Social Support Outside of Religion?
I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this question, but I'd like feedback from others about how to build social connections and find social support outside of religion. One of the social and cultural strengths of religion is that it can (at its best) act as an extended family and social ne...

Re: Seen any love?
@flawed - I guess I should clarify. My life's most fondest memories are NOT church related, but I do have some happy memories of church, specifically one we went to when I was a kid. My family moved around a lot and I quickly learned that there were "friendly churches" and "not-so-fri...

Re: Theater and arts
My best friend and his wife graduated from ACU with theater degrees, and I can say from firsthand experience that "theater people" at ACU are pretty similar to those anywhere else behind closed doors. When my friend moved to LA to be an actor, people at his parents' church were horrified, ...

Re: Black-American experiences
I'm white, and I've no direct experience with integrated churches because the ones I went to growing up were 98% white. But when I was a little kid in the South my family would take me to black CofC meetings and OMG I loved it! After the staid, deliberately non-emotional white CofC experience, it wa...

Re: Seen any love?
I grew in in mainstream conservative CofC's in the 70s and 80s, and some of my fondest memories are of church potlucks, Halloween parties (really!) and other social gatherings. If the CofC didn't have the "everyone else is going to hell" dogma, I probably wouldn't have turned out as virule...
