Re: Lingering doubts

The fire and brimstone shtick used to terrify me on occasion when I was very young, but I guess I decided at a very young age that there was no way I was going to heaven anyway, as that's what I was constantly told, so why worry about it. I either couldn't figure out why I was going to hell or just ...

Re: "She would make a wonderful christian"

It's a pity, so many in the Church of Christ would make good Muslims if only they would renounce their false teachings and do what is right. Quite a few would make decent human beings if they'd get away from the hard core for awhile and get deprogrammed. I know that some really do hurt when their c...

Re: "Friendly" Corrections

It's the "holier than thou" thing.....always highly obnoxious. Very true, Ivy. Some C o C folks have to display their "holiness" by correcting those whom they think are wrong on something. Many years ago my C o C girlfriend(whom I call "Miss Narrow Mind) and her whole famil...

Re: That Settles It

A very arrogant saying if you ask me. Yep, they are an arrogant bunch, and they know it. I checked a local church's (Mayfair) website recently, and right after the very short "what we believe" blurb, they say that they don't believe it's arrogant, just true. I also recently listened to so...

Re: An Observation

Sounds very familiar. It's all about "the church". A similar thing I never really noticed until I left and saw someone one point it out on here is that in the COC you rarely hear people say, "Jesus says..." but always "The bible says..." They don't tend to talk about J...

Re: Hello to my fellow heathens

Fellow heathen here, so you're not alone :) My grandmother actually used to call me a heathen occasionally, when she wasn't telling me I was going to hell so fast I'd bust the bottom out when I landed. I was so young then that my only offense could have been not being obedient enough, but who knows?

Re: North Alabama

I grew up in a NI family from the heart of the hornets' nest in north Alabama. It's definitely not a place you want to be if you were raised in the CoC and then left, especially when your family is still active and connected to everyone else in the area. Lots of angry, vengeful, arrogant, overdress...

Re: North Alabama

I'm a survivor of pretty intense CoC abuse in Noeth Alabama, though I never joined and thought keeping CoC family at arm's length was what I should do instead of cutting off contact with them. I was wrong.

North Alabama CoC refugee here

I'm not sure where to begin because there's just so much. I attended the CoC as a child because my grandmother was a very devout member, but aren't they all? She lived with us at the time because my mother divorced my father, worked full time and was generally too otherwise occupied to spend much ti...
