Re: Back again

Welcome back to the board. I am sorry that you are going through things that are robbing you of your peace. As for your relationship with your sister, it sounds like you have done all that is reasonable for you to do on your end. Should she die without reconciling with you, that is on her. You have ...

Re: Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

Ivy said: I had a pitch pipe and was trained to use it and would have but for one thing. At the congregation I attended there were two people who believed it constituted instrumental music in the worship. The Elders left it up to me to decide what to do about it. They didn't have a problem with it....

Re: Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

Ivy said: This also reminds me of the discreet use of the pitch pipe. The song leader who really cared about having the pitch right would pull it out of his pocket and, as quietly as possible, blow one note at about the volume of a whisper, then pretend he didn't do it.    I had...

Re: Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

The shaped notes have a purpose. Each note of the scale, do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do, has a specific corresponding shape. There are groups that practice shaped note singing. I'm not sure as to which churches or denominations use hymnals with shaped notes. I do know that some of the newer coC hymn...

I Went to Church This Morning

Believe it or not, I attended church this morning. This morning was the last assembly my old congregation had. They are giving up and shutting down and from a practicality standpoint it is way past time. Somehow, I felt an urge to be there. Don't ask why, as I haven't figured that out yet. It was in...

Re: Ridiculous reasons for splits....

No problem. The thing is - Jewish congregations rarely 'split' over 'doctrinal differences'. That just isn't really a thing, I suppose. Also, we are invariably a minority - it isn't like there are seventeen possible nearly options! Usually there is one place, or up to three, perhaps, even in good s...

Re: Mixed Swimming discussions

I remember that issue as really infuriating my Mom, she thought the rationale given her by the elders was absolutely ridiculous (and she was so right): that the girls could get pregnant, you know, those sperm can swim anywhere I guess, evidently just decide to start swimming from a little boy's gen...

Re: Smoking and the COC

Over the course of my lifetime, I saw the coC position on smoking evolve. In this area, tobacco was a major cash crop and one of the few that you could grow on a small scale and make money on, at that. I can remember that when I was a child just about every adult, I knew, smoked including the Elders...

Re: Question for former Christian's but now other religion

Yes, I've had the thought sometimes that the focus of the worship was misplaced. My understanding of the Bible is that we are to worship Almighty God the supreme ruler of the universe, the one that even Jesus and the Holy Spirit obey. Maybe I'm wrong about that. I've heard lots of people pray to Jes...

Re: You Tube song

The "All Seeing Eye" is rooted in Free Masonry. The open eye is one of their more prominent symbols, behind the crossed compass and square which are the best known of their images.
