Re: Easter Posting/Zombie Passage Matthew 27:53

The other passage that is extremely strange is the snake handling and poison passage, Mark 16:9-20. Does anyone else ever remember this one being discussed? One of the CoC’s favorite proof texts, Mark 16:16, is also in this passage: “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.” The most ancient ...

Patate crude (Raw Potato)

And if she was really upset: Coliss (Chalice)
A strong cuss word in Spanish is hostia (host; communion wafer).

A sanitized version of it is ostra (oyster), which sounds somewhat like hostia.

Re: Israel and the 2nd coming.

I took a course in Revelation when I was at ACU. Three possible interpretations were presented: 1. Revelation predicts events that were going to happen soon: the end of persecution and the fall of Rome. Some of the points made were that Nero (Neron in Greek) reduces to 666 in the numerology of the t...

Re: What did your coC teach about the Trinity

I was taught that God was three-in-one, citing the Biblical command to baptize “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” I John 5:7 was also cited: “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” (This ver...

Re: Israel and the 2nd coming.

The Historicist perspective especially picked up steam during the Cold War because most of the hillbilly preachers loved identifying the Communists, particularly the Soviets, as the beast/dragon/any other negative image in the Revelation. Yes, I think people in every generation since Revelation was...

Re: Changing Church of Christ!

I last visited my childhood CoC about fifteen years ago. It’s in a small Texas town of some 2000 people. In the 1950s they were having around 300 for Sunday morning bible classes. When I was last there it was for the Sunday evening service. There were a couple dozen people there, and they met in the...

Re: Reverse consequences of withdrawal of fellowship

One of the hired preachers at the CoC where I grew up in Texas (we usually got a new one every few years) started preaching that they should disfellowship all the people who weren’t showing up for Wednesday night services. It split the church; one of the elders agreed with him and moved to a city 50...

Re: Christmas at Church?

Harvard Divinity School, ACUAlum....impressive!! Why only one year (if you care to share). My plan had been to get a degree there and teach at a CoC college. Several of my teachers at ACU were HDS graduates. But after a year at HDS I realized I really wouldn’t fit in with the CoC any more. It wasn’...

Re: Christmas at Church?

It is just not a good church, but children raised in it are taught a lot of Bible stories and are educated with Biblical knowledge. That is something relatively positive, I guess. I spent a year as a student at Harvard Divinity School in the 1960s. Every year they gave entering students a test on b...
