Re: The "No Paths" New Paths Thread

I am glad you found what works for you. My husband left the COC with me, about 33 years ago. He is agnostic sometimes, atheist sometimes, a humanist usually, and he likes non-theist Buddhism.

Re: I have rejoined the United Methodist Church

Many UMC signs include the motto/quote, "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors." I like that.

Welcome! We are glad to have anyone who has escaped the clutches of the COC! And we have people who have gone in many directions.

I have rejoined the United Methodist Church

I haven't been an official member of any church for some years now. After leaving the COC, I was a Methodist for some years. I have visited various denominations from time to time, but usually when I have attended, I have gone to the UMC. I don't agree with them on everything, but they don't care if...

Re: Newbe

Glad to have you. We have ex-deacons, ex-preachers, preacher's kids, elder's kids, and other assorted people who were deep in the grip of the COC. Some of us left long ago, while others hope to leave soon. Whatever your needs and experiences, we welcome you. Feel free to share as much or as little a...

Welcome! We need another Muslim on the board for balance, I think. Thanks for sharing.

Re: http://findthechurch.com

I browsed the Texas list, looking at churches I attended or visited, lo, so many years ago. It is surprising to see there are still so many of these ultra-conservative COCs. Hallelujah, I haven't been inside any of those buildings in years.

Re: North Alabama

Welcome to the board. I'm not from Alabama. The COC has a huge presence in Texas, too.

Re: The Lord's Prayer

I had to relearn The Lord's Prayer when I started visiting denominations after my departure from the COC. I had memories of hearing it in the early school grades.

Re: The State Religion of the 50s and being marginalized....

I always felt like a religious outsider in public school. I wasn't supposed to recited the Lord's Prayer along with everyone else. I didn't sing religious songs in music class if we had instrumental music. (I have never really forgiven the teacher who angrily said in front of the whole class that sh...
