Re: example of Church of Christ silliness
Our church has gluten free crackers now for communion. Is that scriptural? I bet that could be another 140 page book. I've heard of COCs refusing to offer gluten-free bread. God will protect those with Celiac disease, provided they have enough faith of course. Same mentality as snake-handling? Lev ...

Re: The Lord's Work
I once attended a COC whose building was along the route of a planned marathon on a Saturday. The race organizers asked the church if they could set up a water and first aid station in the church parking lot. Of course not, they were told. This building is for the lord's work, not for entertainment...

Re: Do you have a favorite Bible?
Back to the topic of favorite translations. I prefer the KJV, because of the beauty of the language, and because I did all my childhood memorization with KJV. So if I want to find a verse I sort of recall, I can go to one of the online Bible sites, enter the familiar words in a KJV search, and prest...

Re: Do you have a favorite Bible?
I remember that argument against the NIV, Ivy. That preacher (as well as others) made a big deal about the distinction between the words "as" and "for," and also the Greek words translated in these two ways. This was sometimes called the "Robe of Righteousness" argument...

Welcome! I am your age, but I didn't escape from the COC until I passed 30. I still have some residual damage, but also some strengths that grew out of my up-bringing and the trauma of leaving. This group can be very helpful. I am glad you found us!

Re: That Time of Year Again
After I left the COC, I joyfully embraced Christmas as a religious celebration. We have favorite songs that I recorded on CD soon after I left. One is instrumental only and the other is vocal with instruments. We play these almost constantly in the car starting after Thanksgiving. I first did the re...

Re: Castaway
Welcome. I have been out of the COC a long time now, but only once did I find a good church (non-COC) to really belong to. That was a good time for me, but it didn't last. It's all ok.

Re: I have a question about christenings
When my son was baptized in the United Methodist Church, we didn't have real godparents. We did ask some friends to stand with us, and their whole family did so, the Mom (my friend), the two young children and their unchurched dad. (Not to mention my own husband, who was also unchurched but willing ...
