Smoking and the COC
I had an uncle who attended a COC with his wife until the preacher spoke against smoking (tobacco). My uncle never went again. My own dad smoked for years, even during the few years he was an Elder. He used to smoke outside the building between Bible Class and Worship. Remember my COC experience was...

Welcome to our group of survivors! You are getting out earlier in life than many of us. Therapy should help and feel free to share experiences here. Many of us went through shunning by friends and families, confusion about what we believe and why, and difficulties re-arranging our thought patterns. ...

Re: Cut off from plenty of folks
Welcome. It’s been many years since I left the COC, but I lost a lot of people also. Back in those days, most COCs stayed out of politics. That was good, but still, the church was never a positive place.

Re: The retired people were the worst!
This thread is getting weird and ridiculous even by standard which you can ask any moderator here is very low. Thanks for giving me something to do. I deleted some stuff that was unnecessary and vulgar. Weird, tho, that BH was the one noting a problem. I guess he knows where we draw the line becaus...

Re: Hello again
I had been wondering where you disappeared to. Your COVID experience sounds terrible. I worked as a Social Worker in a long-term care facility before retirement. I was really glad I was already retired when COVID hit. There is one Orthodox Church in the city near us (an hour away is close in west Te...

Re: How did you get into the church of Christ? SURVEY
I will relate one seriously painful "conversion," however. One of my CoC first cousins wanted to marry a young independent Bible church woman. Her condition for marriage: circumcision. For him. Yep, at age 24, he got cirked. He'd been an easy-going, cheerful sort. Under her tutelage, he b...

Re: Public shaming
The last congration I attended has a practice of sitting at the back of the sanctuary for Sunday evening services. If you want to take communion, you have to walk to the front of everyone and sit on the front row by yourself or with a couple of other people. Subtle, but still shaming. Eek! That is ...
