Re: Preterism?

I have a relative who got deeply into Preterism, but later he changed his mind. He wrote a lengthly series of Facebook posts about why it was/was not true. So I don’t know if I really understand the doctrine. But it was clear to me that quite a few COC people came to believe this.

Re: 24 hour and longer prayer sessions

It would be difficult for the COC to have prayer marathons, because they think prayer is just talking to God. They probably run out of things to say. Those who believe prayer is also meditating and listening to God can manage longer sessions. At 3 am, though, most of us could have trouble staying aw...

Re: Knowledge of CoC preachers?

I have found that many preachers/pastors in other Christian denominations don’t preach everything they learned in seminary. In all my years in the United Methodist church, I heard only one pastor say in a service that God didn’t tell the Bible writers exactly what words to write down. She said that ...

You had preachers who had gone to college?? :o That’s right, you grew up mainline.

In my NICOC congregations, we didn’t need edumacated preachers. Some of ours never finished high school.

Re: Disfellowship stories/issues?

I left little more than 10 years ago. Having seen first hand different "disfellowship strategies" over the decades as a member I was a little concerned about what kind of response would be brought forth from the church against me. I have seen a group of elders show up to a former members ...

There is a book, fiction, about a missionary family in Africa. One of my favorite books, it's called The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver.
I also love that book. I thought the family seemed like conservative Baptists.

Re: Stained Glass Windows in CoC?

A little anecdote...once John and I brought his preacher friend from Houston to a service there at that little church. He was of the "Word-Faith" sect, I believe. Very sweet guy and passionate about his beliefs, and wanted to see what our church was like. He told us afterward he "saw...
