Re: Eternal fate of Jewish brethren?
Let's face it. It's all about hate. The idea of sending people that they love to hate to the pits of Hell gives them a feeling of power. Our society is overrun with people who feel otherwise powerless, so hate is the only power that they have. It was one of the best lines from Star Trek. There was t...

Re: Eternal fate of Jewish brethren?
The ancient Hebrews believed that one dies, he goes to Sheol, the realm of the dead. It's like it sounds, you're dead. Everyone goes there whether he was good or rotten. It's much like the Greek Hades. There is no eternal raging hellfire and torment. That idea seems to have crept into the mythology ...

Stock answers of the CoC
The CoC had some real dandy answers to important questions. I was wondering why CoC membership numbers were kind of static and that CoC congregations weren't more widespread. The answer was (of course), 'Very few people want to hear the truth'. I couldn't bear to think that the folks in all the othe...

Re: I don't even have to give the name of the CoC
Often when religion comes up in conversation I try to soft pedal where I went to church and why I ran away from it. I generally describe the church without giving the name. So I tell folks that, 'I went to a church whose doctrine was based on an idea that they had a monopoly on God and that all of ...

Re: Were we also just trying to run away from those people?
Ahhh yes. There were those self appointed attendance police. Yeah... I loved that, 'We missed you' line. Sure they did. I was in the National Guard and had to be away for a couple of weeks for annual summer camp. When I'd come back I'd have this line of self appointed attendance police-persons grill...

Yeah, Nixon claimed to be a Quaker.

Any thoughts on the Quakers?
Even after 35 years of bailing out of the CoC I've been scared to death of organized religion. But I wanna go out a good Christian man. What about the Quakers? It seems like a deep and quiet sort of religion. Have any of you had any experience with The Society of Friends?

Re: Were we also just trying to run away from those people?
Getting away from that horrible judgemental nature of the CoC lifted a zillion tons of weight off of my mind. I was able to accept all of the 'Whosoever shall believers' as bona fide Christians and not worry about being scowled at by the CoC folks.

Were we also just trying to run away from those people?
I wasn't raised in the CoC. I joined it when I was a young man. I was taken in by their claim that they got concrete answers entirely from scriptures and I fell for it. Also I felt a great need to be with good, clean living people. Most of my life I was stuck with horrendously foul mouthed idiots. I...
