Re: 24 hour and longer prayer sessions

I have never seen a CoC have a prayer service or vigil of any kind. My experience of the CoC was that prayer was the most minimal part of the service. But back to what you said about the male members not being comfortable with praying publicly. My dad would never do it. Did your family pray before ...

Re: Preterism?

Preterism is another example of the CoC coming up with their own vocabulary. In CoC parlance, it's the AD 70 doctrine. It was usually railed against but no one seemed to have an understanding of what it really was. There are relatively few full preterists in the theological world but a permutation o...

Re: Acts 2

Yes. I remember this sort of teaching. Either the place of the Gospels was viewed as an open question or they were considered part of the OT. Sometimes the argument would be made that the new covenant was "in Christ's blood" so anything before the cross was not the new covenant. Acts as th...

Re: Knowledge of CoC preachers?

How many others heard the Gospel described as: facts to be believed, commands to be obeyed, and promises to be received? Working within that framework, the Gospels become facts to be believed. They are taken at face value and the preaching quickly passes on to other talking points. I don't think mos...

Re: 24 hour and longer prayer sessions

I have never seen a CoC have a prayer service or vigil of any kind. My experience of the CoC was that prayer was the most minimal part of the service. I think that is because so many men did not feel adequate in prayer, though they were called upon. From time to time, I committed the faux pas of say...

Re: Alarming developments in CoC Universities!

On the subject of women speaking: I was driving through a rural part of Ohio I seldom traverse a few weeks ago and drove past a CoC having a weekend Gospel Meeting. The speaker was a woman. I don't know the first thing about this church other than where it is, that it looks like a typical CoC and us...

Re: Divorce and remarriage?

There was a preacher of some notoriety and fame in the Appalachian counties of Eastern Kentucky, I believe his name was Roy Hall, who taught that whatever happened before baptism did not matter. This position was disdainfully dubbed "baptism washes away marriages" and caused some division ...

Re: Any unmarried CoC ministers?

I remember one who did not marry until he was in his mid 40s. And he married a woman who was 8-10 years older than him. I think his home church was in East Tennessee but he did Gospel Meetings in Kentucky and West Virginia with some regularity. I've seen more than a few congregations where, if someo...

Re: Barton Stone on one loaf!

Interesting, just to play devils advocate for a minute, we know the 1st century Jerusalem church had at a minimum 3,000 baptized believers as recorded in Acts chapter 2. Then in Acts chapter 4 we have recorded that another 5,000 believed. This begs the question, just how big would a single loaf hav...
