Re: My story of leaving the coC

Good to read your story GraceFaith. It brings back both the good memories and the bad memories of our (wife and I) own departure. The list of charges that they always seem to come up with...wow. Yes the bizarre accusations and charges about things that seemingly popped up out of the blue and no one ...

Re: Religion and Cultural Appropriation

For an analogy - a white guy with dreadlocks can be simply expressing an admiration for the style - that's appreciation. a white guy with dreadlocks who claims that dreadlocks were REALLY invented by the Vikings - that's appropriation.          :lo...

Re: Religion and Cultural Appropriation

I can see the cultural appropriation argument maybe if we assume the culture created the religion or was the source of the religion. It seems to me the source of the material matters as to whether it can be misappropriated. So to me it seems, that if the source or a scripture, belief, or lineage is ...

Re: Childless, Mothers/Fathers Day and Church of Christ

I understand the point that the pressure can be increased when you have kids and dependents. But it doesn't really help sometimes to hear that "things could be worse" even if it is true. I recall when I was young and single, the guys I worked with were getting paid more and got bigger rais...

Re: Crazy things C of C have judged you for.

So Coot are you saying you would be fine with folks having sex on your lawn? I mean that is the real "get off" lawn situation It isn't just religion that has sex prohibitions. Spring break always brings stories about arrest for sex on the beach. The rest of the time there are stories about...

Re: Crazy things C of C have judged you for.

We got judged for having our own song books and folding chairs at home, instead of borrowing from the building. We had many copies of a number of various books...it was kind of cool to break out an old Sacred Selections and remember childhood. Our maybe go to a split leaf psalter to change things up...

When you live near or in "umble" then you say humble with an H when talking about humility (not umility) otherwise folks will think your are talking an area up by the big airport

Re: Great is Thy Faithfulness

I believe it has been called the Christian Church anthem (or something like that), but I recall it more associated with Billy Graham.
I think the Methodist picked it up rather more recently.

Onward Christian Soldiers is another old tune that can be used as an anthem of sorts.

Re: CoC congregational splits

Splits? Why that is the scriptural growth model. I am the vine and all that...so just like a plant, you take a cutting and plant it just down the way and suddenly we have growth. OK surely this use of sarcasm is acceptable right?

Re: Attended Catholic church recently

There are nuns who are abused and taken advantage of by priests. There are nuns who sexually abuse children. Just like in any other organization or arrangement, power is power and abuse of that power is not unusual.
