Re: Obsession with Baptists
Yeah, I always thought the preoccupation with Baptists was kinda funny. I think it has to do with the fact that most American CoCs are in the south, and Baptists are the most common denomination in the south, so they view them as their primary competition.

Re: How did you get into the church of Christ? SURVEY
I'm coc royalty on my mother's side. My papaw is the elder at their congregation, and my great grandpa was an elder before he passed away. I've never talked to my dad about his religion, but I think he's some sort of neopagan. Probably one of the reasons they got divorced when I was a toddler. Of co...

CoC funerals
So, I just read this story: http://www.dallasvoice.com/home-10189453.html It made me think of how the CoC does funerals. I remember when my great grandmother died, the preacher who conducted the service used it as an excuse to preach a sermon about salvation. I felt that it was extremely disrespectf...

Re: Lads to Leaders
I've heard of these events before, but have never took part in them. I grew up in a conservative institutional CoC, and the closest I got to those was VBS.

Re: Church Discipline
I've actually never seen a disfellowship happen, although that may be due to my youth (age 20). I wonder, if you let the church know that you don't agree with their doctrines, and then move away without letting anyone know your address, do they still do the whole letter thing?

Divorce
I think it goes without saying that the CoC's stance on divorce is rather...archaic. They're position being that once someone is married, you can only divorce them on the grounds of "sexual immorality", meaning adultery. Has anyone here have any experience or recall any incident in their p...

Re: same-sex marriage
The thing is, unlike transgenderism, body dysmorphic disorder actually responds well to cognitive behavioral therapy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_dysmorphic_disorder#Treatment And if anyone is curious, the wpath standards of care for trans people: http://www.wpath.org/uploaded_files/140/files...

Re: same-sex marriage
I do not deny that there is still more research to be done, but the research done on transgenderism isn't exactly small. We've been studying trans people since at least the 1930s when Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld coined the term "transsexualism". Out of all the research that has been done, allowi...

Re: same-sex marriage
Unlike marriage, which is a choice, gender identity, and this includes being transgender, is not. There have been many studies done which heavily suggest that there is a physical cause behind being trans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of_transsexualism#Biological-based_theories Meaning, that ...
