Former one cupper
Hi all. I think I posted here a couple years back, but I couldn't find any username, so I created a new one. Anyway...
I grew up around the one cup church, but my parents were "out of duty" by the time I was old enough to understand. I was indoctrinated by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Got married to a "preacher" when I was very young, had three kids, left the church, got divorced...my ex is back in the church now (he claimed the exception so I was the big ol sinner-gross) which means my kids have to go when they visit him. They hate it. HATE it. The legalism, sexism, judgement, and exclusivity are just overwhelming. It brings it all back...it's like I'll never truly get away from that church.
I could go on and on about my history and experiences with the church, but for times sake, I'll keep this introduction short. Any other former one cuppers?

Hi and welcome. There are a few former one-cuppers around - you won't be the 'only'.
History is the fiction we invent to persuade ourselves that events are knowable and that life has order and direction. That's why events are always reinterpreted when values change. We need new versions of history to allow for our current prejudices.

You background seems very similar to mine. About half of my extended family is church of Christ. My mom was excommunicated for being the "exception". I tried to forgive my family for how they treated my mom, but their arrogance is making it more difficult.
I'm glad to meet you and hope you find this a safe haven.

Why forgive them? They will never forgive your mother, or you for that matter. I would advise you to avoid them whenever you can and let them know why if they ask.

Welcome to the forum! Thank you for sharing some of your story.

Welcome back to our board. Sorry your kids have to experience this, but at least they hate it instead of liking it! That means you are doing something right.
