I believe a big part of the problem with Pepperdine has to do with its location. California was bad enough as we all know it is "Sin Central" but when they built the new campus just barely off the beach in Malibu their "wayward people" reputation was sealed. Sharing a zip code with the likes of Johnny Carson and having those wild surfer boys and nearly naked beach bunnies doing the most evil thing of "mixed swimming" right in front of all those innocent college kid's eyes was just too much!

Wasn't Ken Starr a professor at Pepperdine? He attended Harding and is a coc dude.
However, he must have been viewed as too liberal to speak at Florida College...

Plus, a good & sound coc school in that area would convert the likes of Johnny Carson, Wil Smith, Larry Hagmn, Mel Gibson etc. with 'the truth'.

Most of those celebs need something. 
Pepperdine still maintains its C of C roots and connection. They still call their annual event the "Bible Lectures," while others have come up with more benign-sounding names. I went one time. Nice event, although it's organized with a little too much precision at times.
The campus is beautiful. Did you know the mountain behind the campus is in the opening segment to MASH? The footage for that is left over from the film, which was shot before the school moved to Malibu.
