Surprised it would be covered in the New York Times.longdistancerunner wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 8:14 pm I found the Articles in the Tennessean newspaper and there was even an article about it in the New York Times.

Re: NB Hardeman accused of abusing male students at Freed Hardeman?
I got a copy of Greg Massey's book about this uproar at FHC and it has a terribly long discussion of this event. What started the controversy was one student told another about a rumor concerning NB Hardeman's daughter. The rumor was his daughter had eloped at the age of 17 because she "had to". This was not true, she had her first child a year after her marriage. The rumor was told in an attempt to discourage the relationship between a student and NB's daughter. She was seen in close association with this student at a skating rink and had kissed the student on a trip. The student offered apologies but it was felt that the disciplinary board had severely reprimanded the student for something that an apology was just in order. This led to a series of events in which the student body and faculty protested that Hardeman had two sets of values, one for his daughter and another for others, and that overall he was not a very honest and fair individual. There were a series of meetings which eventually led to most of the student body leaving the school and Hardeman resigning. This event was covered in national newspapers. The rules concerning relationships between male and females were evolving at FHC although incredibly complex the rules were that women could not ride in cars with male students but could walk to church services together.
