9/11 and religious conversions/recommittments

Post by longdistancerunner »

I go to a number of steel guitar shows. These are conducted all over the US (not just the south) and have older men attending primarily. Most are not particularly religious. However after 9/11 many of the performers (who are guys who were generally professional musicians who had played with famous country music bands/singers) announced they had stopped drinking and given their life to Christ. It was actually quite common in the first two years after 9/11. One individual from New Zealand in particular noticed this was a quite common occurrence at these events.

I wonder if others noticed similar conversions/recommittments occurring in other situations. Or did people attending church at those times notice how 9/11 affected people.

I'm sorry to say all 9/11 did was two things

1. I was empathetically and sympathetically sorry that those people died in the attacks. It broke my heart seeing people fall from those buildings like they did.

2. Selfishly, I was angry that there may be another big war and I did not want to get drafted to have to go fight in it and possibly kill or get killed only for some top secret information come to light many years later that our government was doing something to somebody it had no business doing and that somebody got tired of it and lashed back. Not that what those terrorists did was right even if they had been wronged in some way. At the time the big controversy was how much FDR knew about the Pearl Harbor attack before the Japanese actually struck.

I don't remember much about any conversions back then. Such a weird, horrifying time.
