Alarming developments in CoC Universities!

A place to snark and vent about CoC doctrine and/or our experiences in the CoC. This is a place for SUPPORT and AGREEMENT only, not a place to tell someone their experience and feelings are wrong, or why we disagree with them.

Alarming developments in CoC Universities!

Post by longdistancerunner »

I read about two events occurring at CoC Universities that I consider both very revolutionary in different ways. First is a woman spoke at chapel at Harding Univesity, some considered her talk heretical. Her name is Tiffany Yecke Brooks, author of several books you can find at Amazon, there is not a video or text of her talk. Another thing I read and I know no details there is apparently a movement to reverse the liberal tendencies at David Lipscomb University. This is felt largely due to the "magasphere" influence in the evangelical movement. Unfortunately I do not have more details on these events.

The female speaker at chapel at Harding is just a sign of the reality that at least some in coC realize they must evolve if they are going to have any hope to survive. One of the key issues that is driving the coC's death spiral is the exclusion of women from any meaningful participation in the church. It is almost 2025; educated, enlightened people are not going to tolerate such sexism. Sounds like someone at Harding has pulled his head out of the sand and is in touch with reality on at least that level. As for DLU reversing it's "liberal departure" I seriously doubt they will have much success in putting the genie back in the bottle.

On the subject of women speaking:
I was driving through a rural part of Ohio I seldom traverse a few weeks ago and drove past a CoC having a weekend Gospel Meeting. The speaker was a woman. I don't know the first thing about this church other than where it is, that it looks like a typical CoC and uses the name. My father was gleeful to mark it up as another sign of the drift of Ohio Valley University.

It’s interesting how things are changing at those schools. Tiffany Yecke Brooks speaking at Harding and sparking such strong reactions shows how challenging it can be when someone questions or expands traditional views in a religious setting. It makes me think about the conversations I’ve had with people in similar faith communities—things can get pretty heated when beliefs are tested. As for David Lipscomb, it’s not surprising that the growing influence of conservative politics, especially from the "magasphere," would push for a shift back toward more traditional values. Even though the details are unclear, it feels like a reflection of the broader cultural tensions we're seeing in a lot of institutions these days.
