Knocking on doors?

At my mothers church, which is a fairly mainstream CoC, they began an initiative that was instigated by a CoC in another area of the state, and involved multiple churches, to begin a campaign of knocking on doors like JW's or Mormons do. They had classes and meetings about it both in the Church and with other churches. Kinda the theme was this used to be done and we should start doing it again to convert people. Some people were really into the idea of it, and these were educated people (science teachers in public schools). The campaign started and it seemed to fizzle out very quickly. I was afraid to ask what happened as it might bring out my skepticism, although I did say to my mother I felt this was incredibly dangerous and my mother was not in favor of it either. I wonder what the experience of others with this type of activity has been?

I have knocked many a door in another lifetime...I never found it to be especially effective. These days that is an insane idea. It is pretty common in the news about someone being killed just for pulling into the wrong driveway or knocking on the wrong door.

Another method that has been used in the CoC is mailing out a brochure to all the houses in the area. " Problems? Confused? Jesus is the Way. "

In one congregation, there was maybe 1 response for every 500 brochures mailed out. This led to in-home studies. What the CoC preacher discovered was that folks needed more than information about the "one true church". Even being told about God's patience and grace was not enough. The respondents needed practical help --trained counselors -- to help them overcome drug/alcohol addictions and other problems.

I knocked doors once for the Trinidad TX Church of Christ. My relatives went there when I was a kid and I road around with them passing out invitations to a gospel meeting.

The Edwards' were big on door knocking in their preacher training school. Of course, everything they were big on was a flashback to the 40s or 50s. I think the most valuable piece of advice I ever heard about door knocking -and I don't remember where I heard it- was not to try to get in the house, only try to get them to answer the door and listen to you for 60-90 seconds, offer some form of card or a piece of literature, and make an invitation to an event. . . then go before you've worn out your welcome.
