Did the people at that Church actually shun you totally or did some stay in contact?

Yes they did shun me . A friend of mine saw me at a restaurant with his wife and I went over to greet them and he would not shake my hand . My mom didn't shun my family but my dad did to a certain degree (he got over it years later) . My grandmother on her deathbed asked me to come back to the
"true church " . She was a diehard to the end . The one incident with the guy not reaching out to shake my hand made me even more determined not
to ever go back . BH will get a kick out of this : This same guy later left for the "One Cup" church and he wouldn't shake anyone's hand ! True story as
best I remember ......from "The life and times of an anti-Church of Christ" .

DashRipRock: Amazing story, thanks!

I was dis-fellowshipped back in the day by a church in South Carolina. Didn't hurt my feelings. I wish I had kept the letter though. King St. CoC, Beaufort, SC.

You could have framed it, if you have that type of sense of humor.

I knew exactly who wrote it too. The preacher came clean with me and admitted who wrote the thing. The guy's wife couldn't cook a thing. They were rich people and ate out 90% of the time. But she invited me and my wife over to their house once for dinner and actually attempted to cook. She presented us with the most disgusting version of macaroni and cheese I have ever seen. She apparently had no idea how to make cheese sauce so this mac and cheese was floating in butter with cheddar cheese encrusted to the top layer of noodles.
Re: Disfellowship stories/issues?
I grew up in a mainline coc and only saw a person disfellowshipped once in the 1970s. It was an elder who left his wife for another woman and refused to reconcile with the wife. Pretty sure he was no longer an elder by the time he was disfellowshipped. It was done on Sunday morning (for maximum publicity and humiliation) and it was awkward because there was no blueprint for how to do it “scripturally.” I think they disfellowshipped another guy at the same time but it was not as high profile because he was just a regular shady sort and not a fallen elder. I was just a kid but I thought it was all mean-spirited and pointless.

One thought I just had, thinking back on Ms. Winkler. Apparently it's easier to be forgiven (and deemed eligible for remarriage) for murder of a spouse than it is for divorce.

Well, her husband forced her to have butt sex. Ouch. You got to be willing to forgive violence over something like that. I know if a Church of Christ preacher forced me to have butt sex with him I'd be mad too

We will never know what she and the children suffered at his hands. I believe from her trial testimony that he was a bully and a pervert. That's an ugly combination.

Not to hijack the thread, but I feel like that is a very common subject in pre-marital counseling; CoC, Roman Catholic, or otherwise. Is butt sex a sin? I think it has even been answered in Truth Magazine a few times. I've found the answers can be variable and I think what is said is a fairly good litmus test of which preachers have 'experimented' because we know no sensible CoC preacher would condemn himself.
