Yeah, the offendee population of the CofC is a significant minority, twisting a bit of scripture to tailor the church environment as much as possible to their preferences. My wife used to fume about one little lady who wielded extraordinary power in a church we attended, and the elders seemed to think it was the better part of valor to humor her. She had no strong family connection, wasn't well off, and not terribly knowledgeable outside of her KJV, but by dint of sheer persistent complaint and perpetual focus on who and what were offending her, she bent the whole congregation to her will.
When we went over to a 10 a.m. class time and 11 a.m. service, she fussed and complained to the eldership until they reverted to the earlier hour times - all against the expressed wishes of the majority of the church. She dictated class materials, where they bought their supplies, just all kinds of things. My wife was teaching a children's Sunday class, and the course materials she'd chosen didn't meet the lady's approval, and soon she was being approached by the elder who ran the education program to "reconsider", which she refused to do. "Who's teaching the class, me or her?" didn't seem to sway him, as he just smiled indulgently and said, "Oh, sister ____'s a little high strung, but she's here rain or shine for everything, and we all cut her a little slack," as if that was the knock-down argument. When I suggested to the eldership that they'd badly interpreted the "weaker brother" scriptures to allow people like sister ____ to wield such power, I was told my wife and I needed to search our hearts and make sure we were acting charitably. I was a much younger guy then, and told them to search their backsides and make sure they actually had spines, which didn't go over very well.
