Also, didn't the early church speak in tongues and prophesy? Didn't the women keep their head covered? We don't do any of that.

Unfortunately, ultra-conservative CoC tribes invariably have a super elder that decides what is acceptable to believe, or not to believe. These elders must depend on gullible congregations that accept their warped traditions and twisted Scriptural interpretations with unquestionable adherence. Pet Bible passages are ripped out of context, (often helter-skelter based on preconceived beliefs) and crammed down the collective throats of the church.

These super elders (and often idolized pulpiteers) decide what is important to incorporate into the church, and what to ignore, without any congregational input ... basically, MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY approach.

The offical title of this guy (the "super elder") is Head Elder In Charge. You will see it abbreviated as H.E.I.C. sometimes with out the punctuation. It is a heriditary title passed down father to son or in cases where there is no son to a son-in-law much like a monarchy.
