CoC disfellowships Disciples of Christ

Post by longdistancerunner »

Has anyone here heard about Daniel Sommer and his disfellowshiping of the Disciples of Christ in 1889. From Wikipedia:

The Sand Creek Address and Declaration (1889)
Sommer pushed for a division between the Churches of Christ and the Christian Church and when it took place celebrated by saying, "The Church of Christ will be entirely separated from the Christian Church. Hallelujah!"

The date of the beginning of the actual division was Sunday, August 18, 1889. The place was Sand Creek, Illinois, where Sommer delivered what he called "An Address and Declaration, " drawing its title from the Declaration and Address of Thomas Campbell. At its close Sommer said,

"In closing up this address and declaration, we state that we are impelled from a sense of duty to say, that all such innovations and corruptions to which we have referred, that after being admonished, and having had sufficient time for reflection, if they do not turn away from such abominations, that we can not and will not regard them as brethren."

The division was completed by 1906 when the US Census Bureau asked David Lipscomb if the Churches of Christ should be listed separately in the Bureau's report and Lipscomb responded affirmatively.

That was pretty fast. I was told it was over instrumental music, but that seems too specific.
History is the fiction we invent to persuade ourselves that events are knowable and that life has order and direction. That's why events are always reinterpreted when values change. We need new versions of history to allow for our current prejudices.

Here is a link to the letter/address and good luck on understanding it. It seems the biggest amount of doctrinal hogwash anyone can imagine and is very bitter. There are a lot of vitally important issues here, like the name of the church, whether money can be used by the church for fundraisers, and the topic of instrumental music is there also. There are a lot of issues it would take me days of reading to understand. It appears to be a very bitter letter. I think Sommers recanted some of his harsh rhetoric and then was criticized by people even more hard line than he was.

I remember reading about him and he came out and admitted in life he was wrong on a lot of things or how he handled things

Also, remember that 1906 and 1889 are arbitrary dates. the no sunday school church I went to as a little boy was started in the nineteen teens. The building was built in 1926. For years it was called a Christian Church and was then called Church of Christ only some time later. It may shock you to here this but the Church of Christ and the Christian Church did not actually ever disfellowship each other in Corsicana. They never really interacted but they never declared each other accursed. 😆 First Christian folded years ago . There is 13th Avenue Christian Church but it is small and known as just a Church of Christ that uses instruments.😆

Next time i run into a Church of Christ person out of town passing out flyers or Bibles i will say " oh, you are the Disciples of Christ that dont use instruments". See how they like that! 😂
