Why we need a support group

Many Churches of Christ see themselves as part of the greater evangelical movement in the United States, led by magazines such as Christianity Today, evangelists like Billy Graham, and parachurch ministries like Focus on the Family. This is shown by the actions of Max Lucado, one of the most famous members of the Churches of Christ, who spoke on Christian unity at the 1.3 million man Promisekeepers gathering at the Washington Memorial in 1994. Many Churches of Christ are almost indistinguishable from other evangelical churches from various denominations.

But a minority of Churches of Christ (or “churches of Christ”, as some prefer) see themselves as part of the One True Church, all other churches having become apostate and lost. They believe that since only the Churches of Christ immerse adult believers under water for the forgiveness of sins, then they are the only ones who have actually been biblically baptized, thus they are the only ones in relationship with God. This is why many outside the Churches of Christ see Churches of Christ as a sect.

When a family member leaves these hard-line Churches of Christ they are viewed as lost and out of relationship with God. Some churches practice “withdrawal” from former members, meaning one cannot associate or eat with a former member of the church unless one is urging the former member to return to the fold.  Former members often find this very difficult to deal with. Thus the need for this support group.
